CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

Premarital sex is sexual activity practiced by persons who are unmarried. It is considered taboos in Nepalese Culture and prohibited in Hindu religion. Despite this fact, an increasing number of sexual activities are being reported by Nepalese student. In the context of a global decline in the age of sexual maturation and rising age of marriage, the window of opportunity for young people to engage in premarital sexual relations in the opening.

. The median age at first sexual intercourse for females (17.5) is identical to that of the median age of marriage (17), suggesting that women have their first sexual intercourse within marriage. It is reverse in the case of males indicating that their first sexual intercourse begins outside of marriage. The proportion of never married men and women aged 15-19 is steadily increasing. This leads to more unmarried adolescents, particularly young men becoming sexually active outside of marriage.

Public opinion polls have consistently shown that premarital sex is wrong and dangerous to health resulting in abortions, teenage mothers and sexually transmitted infections (Finer, 2007). Premarital sex is sex before marriage and it is generally found among the youths. It involves fornication, rape, defilement and incest. The causes behind it have been established including curiosity among the youths, proof of manhood, lust, pornography and it adverse effects, insanity and sex promiscuity as well as moral decadence among the youths (Choe, 2004)

There is generally a high levels of family connectedness in Nigeria family. Most of young people feel valuable to families. Young people expressed in vivid terms of their love for family members. Young people always feel close relationship with their parents. Every person always concern about connectedness and how to maintain family relationship and that growing closer and more emotionally dependent on their parents over time, particularly to their mothers ( GSO, et al,2010,phan 2005). young people are influenced by both positive and negative factors in their sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, studies conducted in Nigeria. showed that family connectedness, parental support, parental monitoring, and positive outlook are protective mechanisms for young people. parental and familial factors influence the quality of children close relationship with peers later in their life and support adolescent against negative impact of peers and mass media, and also can help to reduce the probability of engaging in premarital sex mothers ( GSO, et al,2010,podhisita, et, al 2001). Communication between parent and young adult regarding sexuality often is viewed as desirable and is perceived as an effective means of encouraging adolescents to adopt responsible sexual behaviors (Dilorio et al., 1999). however, parents appear more likely to shape adolescent’s attitude and beliefs about sex than their actual knowledge about sex, especially parents5 role in educating moral values. Indeed, some parents believe their primary responsibility is to convey normative, moralsociali6ation or convey proscriptions rather than to give instructional information about sexual behavior, such as how to resist unwanted pressure (regnerus,2005)

premarital sex has become more widely accepted among young people. low young people consider that love should dominate marriage and the quality of an individuals sex life is more highly valued than it used to be. Attitudes towards sex and sexual behavior have become recogni6ed as an individual0s responsibility as long as no offence occurs against society or the interests of other individuals, resulting in there cognition of diversity of sexual behaviors. Based on this researcher wants to investigate the influence of family background and school factors on attitude towards premarital sex among secondary school students in Lagos state

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Researchers have observed that there is prevalence of premarital sexual practices among secondary school students, the teenagers in contemporary society, which leads to high incidence of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Most writers and school authorities frown upon adolescents’ indulgence in premarital sex. Some communities carry out disciplinary action on youths who indulge in it. The Federal Health Management Board engages in series of campaigns to create public awareness on the danger and circulation of sexually transmitted diseases. But in this study, literature is lacking on influence of family bacground and school factors on attitude towards pre marital sex among senior secondary school students . Given the amount of public concern for the consequences of apparent adolescent’s indulgence in premarital sex, finding out the famly background and school factors’ attitude will provide the necessary information for planning useful intervention programmes aimed at solving the problems arising from seemingly premarital sexual practices.
