CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background of the Study
There is a serious need to ensure that alcohol impaired drivers stay off the road. It is estimated that one person is killed every 32 minutes and another person is injured every 26 seconds in alcohol related accidents. Highway death increase slightly from 41,717 death in 1999 to 41,812 in 2000. Forty present (16,725) involved alcohol, an increase from 38% the previous year.
Alcohol depends on the blood to breath ratio. This ratio describes the relationship between the alcohol content of the breath and the alcohol content of blood at any given time. The acceptable ratio of breath to alcohol to blood alcohol is 2,100:1. This means 2,100ml of a deep air lung same amount of alcohol as 1ml of blood. All breath testing instruments developed since 1939 use this ratio. The ratio is guided by Henry’s Law, which states the quantity of gas that dissolves in a liquid at a standard temperature and pressure are directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas in the gas phase
1.1 Statement of the Problem
The use of alcohol by drivers has been identified as one of the major causes of road accidents on our roads.
1.2 Aim and Objectives of Study
The main aim of this project is to design and construct an alcohol detector that will indicate the present of alcohol in a person through breathe.
1.3 Significance of the Study
The project will be beneficial to vehicle users, this prevent accident cause by the influence of alcohol.
1.4 Scope of Study
The system detects the parent of alcohol in ones breath sample and decides whether one can operate and control the vehicle or not.
It is being used in many countries as ignition interlock system has been helpful to decrease the number of accidents.
It is wired in a way that before starting the car, the driver has to submit a breath test through a tube joined to dashboard monitor.
1.5 Limitation of Study
The following were the difficulties that were encounter during the cost of this work:
- Reference material for the research of this work was difficult to get. It is time consuming
It was difficult to get good component due to much fake once in the market.
