ABSTRACT
This study was on impact of staff attitude on patronage ( Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi ) The total population for the study is 100 staff of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi and 100 patients. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made doctors, nurses, men patients and female patients were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

INTRODUCTION
- Background of the study
The attitudes of doctors and nurses toward patient safety represent a significant factor in hospital safety climates and medical error rates. In professional clinics, hospitals, and other workplace setting, negative attitude can affect physician and other healthcare professionals in terms of patient’s treatment. According to Corrigan et al. and Wahl negative attitude are suppressed by the majority of primary care physicians. In addition, even productive physicians harboring minor negative attitude can be involved in such unwanted behavior as discrimination. Quantitative survey research on patient safety climate attitudes has been conducted in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi, Bauchi state, showing doctors and nurses generally report more positive attitudes towards the dimensions of hospital safety climate and teamwork and less positive attitudes on the dimensions of hospital working conditions and the quality of management support among nurses and doctors with respect to management support and working conditions.
Health as a fundamental human right was recognized in the World Health Organization’s Constitution stating that the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, and political belief, economic or social condition. Patient’s gratification with the services proposed is one of the important objectives of medical care, which can have substantial impingement on health status of patients. Deprivation of patients right has a lot of strain for patients and families and may induce impairment to social esteem of the health system.
Caring is important in nursing (Gray, 2008:169). Finfgeld-Connett (2008:198) explains caring as an interpersonal process characterized by expert nursing, interpersonal sensitivity and intimate relationships. Nursing includes both technical or medical aspects and emotional aspects of care. Brilowski and Wendler (2005:642) acknowledge emotional and technical aspects to caring, listing attributes to caring as attitudes, actions, relationships, acceptance and variability. Opposite to caring is uncaring. Wiman and Wikblad (2004:427) describe uncaring attributes as being disinterested, insensitive, cold and inhuman. Providing high quality care involves doing the right thing at the right time, and improving health outcomes for patients, families and communities (Uys & Naidoo, 2004). Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Some researchers identified dissatisfaction among patients with the quality of care they received (Uys & Naidoo, 2004) and with uncaring nurses (Wiman & Wikblad, 2004:428). Other researchers found poor care provided for specializes, such as HIV (Van Dyk, 2007:50) and Hepatitis C (Frazer et al., 2010:597), which was related to poor health worker attitudes. Nurses need to have a positive attitude towards patients and patient care. Attitudes are “latent hypothetical characteristics that are inferred from external observable cues” (Ajzen, 2005:23). Health workers’ attitudes affect behaviour, quality of care and health outcomes (Dias et al., 2012). Negative attitudes affect care with elderly patients (Jacelon, 2002:232) and other vulnerable patients such as Hepatitis C (Frazer et al., 2010). - STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This hospital received complaints about staff attitudes and poor standards of nursing care. Nurses’ attitudes needed to be explored so that strategies could be implemented to improve the quality of care and address problems experienced by patients.
- OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study are;
- To investigate staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state
- To ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the nurses’ perspective
- To ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the patients’ perspective
- To ascertain the factors that contribute to staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state towards patient care
- RESEARCH QUESTION

- RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;
H0: there is no staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state
H1: there is staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state.
H02: There are no factors that contribute to staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state towards patient care
H2: There are factors that contribute to staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state towards patient care
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will be very significant to students, ministry of health and the general public. The study will give a clear insight on impact of staff attitude on patronage. The study will provide solution to health care workers negative attitude to patients. The study will also serve as a reference to other researcher that will embark on this topic.
- SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study covers impact of staff attitude on patronage. The study will be limited to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;
- a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
- b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
ATTITUDE: A settled way of thinking or feeling about something.
PATRONAGE: Patronage is the support, encouragement, privilege, or financial aid that an organization or individual bestows to another.
HEALTHWORKER: Community health worker (CHW) are members of a community who are chosen by community members or organizations to provide basic health and medical care to their community capable of providing preventive, promotional and rehabilitation care to these communities.
1.8 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows
Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, research question, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding. Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
