ABSTRACT

This research work empirically explored the influence of conflict resolution on the performance of public organization in some selected secondary schools of karu local government area of Nassarawa state. The purpose of which is to investigate the influence conflict resolution on employees performance as well proffer solution to the problems of conflict. Public organizations are charged with the responsibility of providing services to the public, in performing its duties it a peaceful environment. The objectives of this study were to examine the impact of conflict resolution on employee’s performance in secondary schools of Karu local government area and to investigate the extent to which conflict resolution mechanism influence employee’s commitment in secondary schools of Karu local government area. The scope of the study is some selected secondary schools of Karu local government area of Nassarawa state making use of the employees, the tradition of classical theory was used as a framework. The research design used for this study is survey, the population targeted for this study consists of all secondary schools in Karu local government area of Nassarawa state, which is a total of 20 schools. 100 workers were used as sample size and cluster sampling technique was applied. Instrument used for this study is the questionnaire. Data collected were collected from primary sources. From the analysis of the data, the findings shows that conflict resolution influence employees’ performance in secondary schools of Karu local government area  and conflict resolution has several positive effect on employees’ performance in secondary schools of Karu local government area such as building corporations, improving organizational innovativeness and leading to quality decisions. Following the findings, it was recommended that conflict resolution should be pursued and inculcated by the management of public enterprises. The essence of conflict resolution is to improve employee’s performance and commitment to work as well as conflict resolution leads to improvement in any organization, as such management should try to ensure peace should in workplace. Policies aimed at ensuring peace should be enacted and maintained. The study concludes that employees can only work effectively in the absence of conflict.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background to the Study

Conflict resolution is conceptualized as the methods and processes involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and redistribution. It is the process by which two or more parties engaged in a disagreement, dispute or debate reach an agreement by resolving it.

The assessment of conflict resolution in public organization cannot be overemphasized as it has become a vital tool for promoting public organizational development, as such conflict resolution is necessary tool for any organization to excel. Gordon (1997) sees conflict as the result of incompatible potential relationships, this occurs as a result of one party perceiving that another party has impeded its concerns. Conflict occurs in any organization, it may occur between staffs of the organization, between management boards or between management and its staffs.

The need for a new approach to workplace dispute resolution has become central focus of public employment policy (Gibbons, 2007). Conflict in an organization is perceived as inevitable. It is one of the most prevalent issues in any organization including public organizations of Nigeria. Conflict between individual and between groups is a universal phenomenon. If management of an organization gets familiar with the areas of conflict, it will help such management make necessary adjustment and changes so as to curb the chances of such conflict re-occurring.

Public organizations of Nigeria is charged with various vital duties across the country, conflict is a factor that can contribute to failures of public organizations performing its duties properly. Thus, due attention should be given by such organizations for resolving its conflict in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives.

In Nigeria, many public organizations have been deficient in their operations and the overall effectiveness due conflicts, secondary schools in Karu local government area is not an exemption. Public organizations are owned and operated by the government and exist to provide services to its citizens. To effectively perform its function, it require well trained professional who are not faced with the problem of communications, differences in perceptions among others and if at all in its minimal state.

1.2. Statement of the Research Problem

Poor commitment of employees’ towards their job reduces their level of productivity. In public organizations, employees are responsible for performing several vital works in any economy. They provide essential services to the public such as education, health among others. To bring about the desired goals they must function in a peaceful environment.

Conflict is inevitable as some scholars have pointed out, thus conflict need to be resolved. This is so much so in secondary schools of karu local government area of Nassarawa state. But, for some time now it appears management have tried various methods in resolving the issues of conflicts in their organization.

In public organizations, the ability to achieve and sustain competitive advantage lies within the availability of peace in workplace. It is against this background that the researcher considered the study of assessment of the influence of conflict resolution on the performance of public organization in some selected secondary schools in Karu local government area of Nassarawa state.

 

1.3. Objectives of the study

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of conflict resolution on the performance of public organization in some selected secondary schools in Karu local government area of Nassarawa state. The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the impact of conflict resolution on employee’s performance in secondary schools of Karu local government area.
  2. investigate the extent to which conflict resolution mechanism influence employee’s commitment in secondary schools of Karu local government area.

 

1.4. Research Questions

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

  1. What is the impact of conflict resolution employees’ performance in secondary schools of Karu local government area?
  2. To what extent does conflict resolution mechanism influence employees’ commitment in secondary schools of Karu local government area?

 

1.5. Significance of the Study

The critical nature of conflict resolution to the success or growth of any organization is given, this is because presence of conflict is completely useless to the full achievement of the organizational goals. This applies to public organizations in general and secondary schools in particular. As employees lack the necessary capacity and confidence to perform their duties when made to work in an area of conflict, thus affecting productivity. Empirically, this study is carried out to access the influence of conflict resolution on the performance of public organization in some selected secondary schools in Karu local government area of Nassarawa state so as to ameliorate such schools from her low productivity problem.

This study will be important to secondary schools of Karu local government area, as it will help guide the management of such schools on how it can operate, prevent conflict, resolve conflicts.  It will teach it the importance of conflict resolution on employee’s performance in public organizations. It will also help the management get maximum value from the employees by introducing methods of conflict resolution at workforce.

This study will be of utmost importance to investors, government and the researchers because it will provide policy recommendations to the various Nigeria stakeholders taking adequate measures in public organizations.  It is hoped that the exploration of selected secondary schools will provide a broad view of the operations of the public organizations to investors and government. It will contribute to existing literature on the subject matter by investigating empirically the role, conflict resolution plays in public organizations of the country. This study will be of benefit to;

The Academia: members of the academia will find the study relevant as it will also form basis for further research and a reference tool for academic works.

Government: this study will reveal to the government happenings in the public organizations. Formulation and implementation of policies based on this findings would ensure development in the industry.

Investors: this study shall also be valuable to the investors especially those who may have research interest as it shall guide their private investment decisions.

This study at the end will enlighten the management of public organizations on the implication of conflict.

 

1.6. Scope of the Study

This study is intended to assess the influence of conflict resolution on the performance of public organization in Nigeria with particular emphasis on some selected secondary schools in Karu local government area of Nassarawa state using some selected secondary school workers.

 

1.7. Operational Definition of Terms

The following terms have been defined operationally.

  • Conflict: conflict is a clash of interest. An active disagreement between people with opposing opinions or principles.
  • Conflict resolution: is a conceptualised methods and process involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution.
  • Management: is the administration of an organization, whether it is a business or government body. It is the process of administering and controlling the affairs of the organization, irrespective of its nature.
  • Employee performance: it refers to how employees behave in a work place and how well they perform the job duties they are obligated to perform.

 

1.8 Organization of the Study

This study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is introduction which consists of the background to the study, statement of problem, research questions, research  hypotheses,  objectives  of  the study, the  significance  of  the  study,   the scope  and  limitations  of  the  study  and  finally the  organization of the study. Chapter two deals with the literature review which consists of the conceptual literature, theoretical literature, empirical literature, theoretical framework. Chapter three gives the research methodology including research design, population of study, sample size, sampling technique, method of data collection, instrument of data analysis, method of data analysis, validity/reliability of instrument.  Chapter four is presentation and analysis of data, discussion of findings. Chapter five gives the summary, conclusion and recommendations.
