Attitude, Behaviours, and Practice of Secondary School Headteachers Towards Fundraising, Supply Purchase and Staging of Inter-house Athletics in Ethiope West Local Government Area
Abstract
The research examined the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of secondary school head teachers about inter-house athletics event staging, supplier procurement, and fundraising activities in the Ethiope West Local Government Area. Using a structured questionnaire intended to gather information from a sample of 120 respondents, a quantitative survey research design was chosen. Using SPSS27, the gathered data were displayed and examined. To investigate the connections between different components, hypotheses were developed and put to the test using t-tests. The results showed a strong correlation between the performance of fundraising campaigns and headteachers’ attitudes towards fundraising. The availability and calibre of materials in schools were also greatly impacted by procurement procedures. On the other hand, it was discovered that good techniques used to organise inter-house sporting events had a favourable impact on student involvement and performance. Based on the findings, it was determined that headteachers’ attitudes and behaviours are critical to the accomplishment of fundraising campaigns and procurement procedures, both of which have an impact on the general operation of schools. The deployment of tactics to strengthen procurement procedures, increase the sustainability of fundraising and improve inter-house athletics event organisation are among the recommendations made itoraise student success and participation. In conclusion, the study adds to the body of knowledge by shedding light on the attitudes, actions, and routines of secondary school headteachers in the Ethiope West Local Government Area. This is especially true with regard toaboutition, fundraising, and athletic event planning. For stakeholders, legislators, and school administrators looking to improve educational outcomes and increase the efficiency of school management, these findings have important ramifications.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Secondary schools have a vital role in shaping students’ academic, social, and physical development in the Ethiope West Local Government Area of Nigeria (Mozafari et al., 2020). These educational institutions serve as both community cornerstones and learning hubs, influencing the next generation and advancing society. Headteachers at secondary schools have an essential role in this setting (Mshelia, 2020). Headteachers, as the principal administrators of these establishments, are accountable for managing several aspects of school administration, such as fundraising, supply acquisition, and inter-house sports scheduling. Their decision-making and leadership have a big influence on how the school runs overall and how well the kids are doing (Larry, 2022).
A vital component of school administration is fundraising, particularly in areas with little government support (Jeroh, 2021). Headteachers at secondary schools in the Ethiope West Local Government Area frequently struggle with a lack of finance, therefore they must come up with creative ways to augment it (Ladani, 2021). They use a variety of fundraising techniques, from more conventional ones like bake sales and charity functions to more contemporary ones like corporate sponsorships and crowdfunding. These initiatives are essential for meeting the school’s pressing needs, which include extracurricular activities, instructional supplies, and infrastructure upgrades (Mugari & Masocha, 2021).
Additionally, purchasing resources is necessary to establish the best possible learning environment that promotes academic success (Kamarudin & Fauzee, 2021). Assuring that schools have the tools they need for efficient teaching and learning is a major responsibility of head teachers (Li et al., 2021). This includes communicating with suppliers, settling agreements, and overseeing spending planstoo purchase textbooks, lab supplies, and other teaching aids. Headteachers can optimise the allocation of cash and improve the calibre of education provided to students by practising procurement with caution and creativity (Mars, 2021).
Inter-house sports competitions are a crucial component of secondary education, in addition to academic endeavours (Momoh, 2021). These activities build students’ feelings of community and school pride while encouraging physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship (Ogbemudia, 2021). Headteachers actively encourage the planning of inter-house tournaments because they understand the value of athletics in the overall development of their students (Jain, 2021). They work in tandem with coaches to plan training sessions and equipment purchases, and they supervise the orderly execution of athletic events. Headteachers help students develop their whole character by using athletics to instil qualities of discipline, tenacity, and fair play (Igbanugo, 2022).
Limited financial resources, bureaucratic constraints, and societal expectations often pose significant hurdles to effective school management. Headteachers must navigate these challenges with resilience and creativity, seeking innovative solutions to address pressing needs while upholding educational standards and values (Bailey, 2021).
Overall, students’ entire educational experience is greatly impacted by the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of secondary school headteachers in the Ethiope West Local Government Area (Bucher & Krotee, 2022). Headteachers are crucial in determining the direction of schools and developing each student’s potential because of their commitment and leadership. Headteachers play a vital role in the overall development of students and the progress of society at large by creating a positive learning environment, encouraging extracurricular involvement, and managing resource restrictions.
Statement of Problem
The educational environment in the Nigerian Ethiope West Local Government Area poses several issues and needs to be addressed regarding secondary school headteachers’ attitudes, behaviours, and practices regarding supply procurement, fundraising, and organising inter-house athletics events. Although secondary schools play a crucial part in the overall development of pupils, there is a dearth of complete knowledge regarding the methods and tactics headteachers use to oversee these important areas of school administration.
One significant gap is the limited research focusing specifically on the attitudes of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising activities (Mozafari et al., 2020). While fundraising is essential for addressing resource constraints and enhancing the quality of education provided, there is a dearth of empirical evidence exploring the perceptions and motivations of headteachers in this regard. Understanding their attitudes towards fundraising can provide insights into their willingness to engage in proactive The paucity of studies particularly examining secondary school headteachers’ opinions towards fundraising initiatives is one notable gap (Mozafari et al., 2020). Although generating funds is crucial for overcoming financial limitations and improving the calibre of education offered, there is a paucity of empirical research examining headteachers’ attitudes and incentives in this context. Gaining an understanding of their perspectives on fundraising will help determine whether or not they are willing to take the initiative to seek out extra funding for the school’s requirements.
efforts to secure additional funds for the school’s needs.
Comparably, research is required to determine how secondary school headteachers behave when it comes to purchasing supplies (Kamarudin & Fauzee, 2021). The procurement procedures of headteachers in the Ethiope West Local Government Area have not received much attention, even though procurement is essential for guaranteeing that schools have the supplies needed for efficient teaching and learning. Examining their purchasing practices might reveal the difficulties companies encounter in locating supplies, controlling spending, and allocating resources as efficiently as possible.
More investigation is needed into how secondary school headteachers organise inter-house sporting events (Momoh, 2021). Although student engagement and physical fitness are greatly enhanced by athletics activities, little study has been done on the tactics headteachers use to plan and oversee these programmes. Examining their methods can shed light on the tools, safety nets, and administrative issues related to fostering a strong sports culture in schools.

- Effective practices employed by secondary school headteachers in staging inter-house athletics events positively influence student participation and performance.
Significance of the Study
Firstly, this study can inform targeted interventions and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of school administration. By identifying areas where headteachers may require support or professional development, educational stakeholders can design tailored training programs, workshops, and resources to address their specific needs. For instance, if headteachers demonstrate limited knowledge or skills in fundraising, training programs can focus on equipping them with practical strategies and techniques to mobilize resources effectively.
Secondly, understanding the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of headteachers can provide valuable insights for policymakers and administrators tasked with shaping education policy and resource allocation. By elucidating the challenges faced by headteachers in fulfilling their roles, policymakers can develop targeted policy reforms, allocate resources strategically, and streamline administrative procedures to support effective school management. For example, if bureaucratic hurdles hinder the procurement of essential supplies, policymakers can advocate for streamlined processes and increased funding to address these barriers.
Moreover, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on educational leadership and management in the context of secondary schools. By generating empirical evidence and insights into the practices of headteachers, the study enriches the theoretical framework and understanding of effective school leadership practices. This knowledge can inform future research endeavours, guide the development of theoretical models, and contribute to the professionalization of educational leadership.
Additionally, the findings of this study can foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among educational stakeholders, including headteachers, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. By disseminating research findings through conferences, publications, and professional networks, stakeholders can engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices, and collectively work towards addressing common challenges and achieving shared goals in secondary education.
Furthermore, understanding the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of headteachers can have tangible benefits for students and the wider school community. Effective school administration directly impacts the quality of education provided, student outcomes, and overall school climate. By enhancing the capacity of headteachers to manage fundraising, procurement, and athletics events, schools can create a conducive learning environment, optimize resource utilization, and promote student engagement and well-being.
