Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture Production in Enugu State; A Case Study of Uzo Wani LGA

Abstract

The study examined climate change impacts on agriculture production in Enugu state a case study of Uzo Wani LGA. A quantitative survey research design was adopted for this study and  Data were collected from 68 farmers in the region using a structured questionnaire. SPSS23 employed to analyze the data. The results showed that farmers in Uzo-Uwani LGA perceived climate change as a significant threat to agricultural production in the region. The major climate change variables identified by the farmers were increasing temperature, decreasing rainfall, and changing rainfall patterns. These variables had significant impacts on crop yield and production in the region. The study found that changing rainfall patterns had a significant negative impact on crop yield, while increasing temperature had a significant positive impact on crop yield. The significant value of the F-statistic was estimated at 0.031 (3.1%), which was less than 5%, leading to the conclusion that there is a significant relationship between climate change variables and agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA, and appropriate adaptation measures can mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural production. The study’s findings have important implications for the development of appropriate adaptation strategies and policies in the agricultural sector in Uzo-Uwani LGA and other regions facing similar challenges.

 

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Climate change is a global phenomenon that is affecting multiple facets of human life, particularly agriculture. The agricultural sector is becoming increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as the world’s climate continues to change. Changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events like droughts and floods are having a significant impact on crop yields and agricultural productivity. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2021), climate change is one of the main drivers of a decline in global food security, leading to reduced crop yields and increased food prices.

In Nigeria, agriculture is a significant economic activity, accounting for about 22% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing about 70% of the population (NBS, 2021). The sector is the main source of food for the population and a significant contributor to rural livelihoods. However, climate change is posing a significant threat to the country’s agricultural sector.

Studies have shown that climate change is already affecting agricultural productivity in Nigeria, with adverse impacts on crop yields, livestock, and fisheries (Majid et al., 2021; Umar et al., 2020). Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns are affecting the timing of planting and harvesting, leading to reduced yields and crop failure in some cases. Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are also having severe impacts on crop production and livestock.

The impact of climate change on agriculture in Nigeria is a significant concern, given the country’s dependence on agriculture for food and economic growth. It is, therefore, essential to understand the specific impacts of climate change on agriculture in different regions of the country. A case study of Uzo-Uwani LGA in Enugu State can provide insights into the impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity in the region.

Enugu State is one of the states in Nigeria that is highly dependent on agriculture for its economic development. The state is located in the southeastern region of Nigeria and has a population of approximately 3.2 million people. Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA) is one of the seventeen LGAs in Enugu State. It is a rural area with a population of about 222,278 people, and agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the people.

Climate change is already having adverse impacts on agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State. According to a recent study by Okeke et al. (2021), changes in rainfall patterns, temperature, and extreme weather events such as droughts and floods are affecting agricultural productivity in the region. The study found that the area has experienced a decline in rainfall amount and an increase in temperature over the past few decades. This has led to a decrease in crop yields, with some crops failing to mature due to prolonged dry spells.

Another study by Agwu and Akpan (2020) found that drought is a significant problem for agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA. The study reported that drought has led to crop failure and low yields in the area, affecting farmers’ income and livelihoods. The study recommended the adoption of appropriate drought-resistant crops and irrigation methods to mitigate the impacts of drought on agriculture in the region.

In addition to drought, flooding is also a severe problem for agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA. According to a recent report by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA), the area is prone to flooding, with the risk increasing due to climate change (NHSA, 2022). Flooding can lead to soil erosion, loss of crops, and damage to infrastructure such as roads and bridges, affecting agriculture and the overall economy of the area.

Therefore, there is a need to investigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA and propose appropriate adaptation measures. One possible adaptation measure is the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, such as the use of drought-resistant crops, improved water management, and soil conservation techniques (FAO, 2021). Another adaptation measure is the development of early warning systems for extreme weather events such as floods, which can help farmers prepare and mitigate the impacts of these events on their crops and livelihoods.

Statement of Problem

Climate change has been identified as a significant threat to global food security. In Nigeria, climate change is already having adverse impacts on agricultural productivity and food security, with negative consequences for the economy and human well-being. The impact of climate change on agriculture in Enugu State is a significant concern, especially in Uzo-Uwani LGA, where agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the people.

There is evidence that climate change is already having adverse impacts on agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA, as manifested in changes in rainfall patterns, increased temperature, and frequent droughts. These have led to low crop yields, reduced agricultural productivity, and food insecurity in the area. However, there is a lack of adequate information on the specific impacts of climate change on agriculture in Uzo-Uwani LGA and appropriate adaptation measures to mitigate the effects.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture production in Uzo-Uwani LGA and propose appropriate adaptation measures to enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector to climate change.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA. The specific objectives are:

  1. To identify the major climate change variables affecting agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA.
  2. To examine the impacts of climate change on crop yield and production in Uzo-Uwani LGA.
  3. To propose appropriate adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA.

Research Questions

The following research questions will guide this study:

  1. What are the major climate change variables affecting agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA?
  2. How has climate change impacted crop yield and production in Uzo-Uwani LGA?
  3. What are the appropriate adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA?

Research hypotheses

The following hypotheses will be tested in this study:

Null Hypotheses(H0):

  1. There is no significant relationship between climate change variables and agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani L GA.
  2. The impacts of climate change on crop yield and production in Uzo-Uwani LGA are not significant.
  3. Appropriate adaptation measures cannot mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA.

Alternative Hypotheses(H1):

  1. There is a significant relationship between climate change variables and agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani L GA.
  2. The impacts of climate change on crop yield and production in Uzo-Uwani LGA are significant.
  3. Appropriate adaptation measures can mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA.

Significance of the Study

This study’s findings will be of significant importance to various stakeholders in the agricultural sector in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State, and Nigeria as a whole. The study’s findings will provide information on the specific impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA and identify appropriate adaptation measures to mitigate the effects. This information will be useful to policymakers, agricultural extension agents, farmers, and other stakeholders in designing and implementing strategies to enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector to climate change.

The study’s findings will also contribute to the body of knowledge on the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Nigeria. This study’s results will add to the existing literature on the subject, and the information can be useful to researchers, scholars, and other stakeholders interested in climate change and agriculture in Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State, Nigeria. The study will specifically examine the impacts of changes in rainfall patterns, temperature, and droughts on crop yield and production. The study will use a case study approach, with data collected from farmers and agricultural extension agents in the area.

The study’s main limitation is the small sample size, which may not be representative of the entire Uzo-Uwani LGA. The study’s findings may, therefore, have limited generalizability to other areas in Enugu State or Nigeria. Another limitation is the reliance on self-reported data from farmers and agricultural extension agents, which may be subject to recall bias and other measurement errors.

 Operational Definition of Terms

Climate Change: Refers to the long-term changes in the average temperature, precipitation, and other meteorological variables that occur over several decades or more.

Agriculture: Refers to the cultivation of crops and the raising of animals for food, fiber, and other products.

Production: Refers to the amount of output or yield of agricultural products.

Adaptation Measures: Refers to actions taken to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on agriculture, including changes in farming practices, use of drought-resistant crops, and irrigation.

Organization of the Study

There are five chapters in this study, the first of which discusses the background, statement of the research problem, aims, research question, and research hypotheses as well as the study’s significance, scope, and limitations. Chapter 2 contains conceptual, theoretical, and empirical reviews. The study methodology is covered in Chapter 3. This chapter covers the research design, the study’s population, the sample size and methodology, the data collection source and method, the study’s instruments, the data analysis method, and the validity and reliability of the study. Chapter four contains data presentation, Analysis and discussion of findings. Chapter five of this study encompasses the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations.
