ABSTRACT

This research work deals with patient diagnosis system. Chapter one is an introduction to the project to describe what the project entails. It discusses the problems in the existing system. Also described in chapter one are the aim, the objectives, the significance and the limitation of the study.

Chapter two is the literature review of the project which contain diverse research and scholarly articles written of this project while chapter three describes the method of data collection, system analysis and design and improvement on the proposed system.

Chapter four describes the implementation and result of the project and lastly, chapter five gives the summary, conclusion and recommendation..

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Patient diagnosis is to the process of attempting to determine or identifying a possible disease or disorder to the opinion reached by this process. A diagnosis in the sense of diagnostic procedure can be regarded as an attempt at classifying an individual’s health condition into separate and distinct categories that allow medical decisions about treatment to be made. Subsequently, a diagnostic opinion is often described in terms of a disease or other conditions.

In the medical diagnostic system procedures, of the disease or conditions of interest, that is, what caused the disease or condition and its origin is not entirely necessary. Such elucidation can be useful to optimize treatment, further preventing recurrence of the disease or condition in the future.

Patient Diagnosis Systems (PDS) are interactive computer programs designed to assist healthcare professionals with record handling, information management and decision making skills. The clinician interacts with the software utilizing both the clinician’s knowledge and the software to make a better analysis of the patient’s data than neither humans nor software could make on their own.
Typically, the system makes suggestions for the clinician to look through and the he picks useful information and removes erroneous suggestions.

Computer Aided Diagnostic systems were first developed in the 1950s and were based on production rules and decision frames (Engelmore & Morgan, 1988). More complex systems were later developed, including blackboard systems (Engelmore & Morgan, 1988) to extract a decision, and artificial neural networks (ANNs). Recently, a number of CAD systems have been implemented to address a number of diagnostic problems.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In every health organization, they encounter numerous problems.  An organization encounter problem in the area of documentation which includes misplacement of vital information or cases as a result of the services that are available or rendered when it is needed duplications of effort due to inconsistency in activities and a lot of time is taken in search of file or reported cases when it is needed for processing.

Since it is actually this problem that is discovered that promoted for the design and implementation of a computerized patient diagnosis model to enable the organization to work more effectively

1.3       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Its significance is in its ability to provide proper handling of files and records in the hospital and enabling the clinicians make proper reports on births, deaths and diagnosis of patient. This promotes better patient care by enhancing collaboration between clinicians and patient because loss of information is prevented and voluminous paper works is being reduced.

1.4       AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this research work is to design a patient diagnostic application, capable of solving the already listed problems for His Glory Hospitals.

The objectives of the system are-

  1. To develop modern interactive software that will aid clinicians in handling of records.
  2. To design a system that will be used in detecting problems that pose obstacle with a view of modifying the operations and developing a new computerized system that will be more efficient and accurate such as in the area of misplacement of vital documents a computer will be used to record store and retrieval of large volume of documents.
  • To enable easy retrieval and access to birth, death and patient diagnostics information
  1. To reduce the duplications of efforts due to inconsistency in activities and time that is taken in search of file when it is required for processing
  2. To setup efficient database system.

1.5       METHODOLOGY

The research work will adopt the use of Microsoft Visual C#, as the programming tools and Microsoft SQL, as the database.

1.6       SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is specifically concerned with the computerized patient diagnosis model.  Although many activities are being performed in a hospital, this work is therefore concerned with patient diagnosis.

1.7       LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research work will be limited to patient record, birth record, death record and diagnosing patient modules respectively.

1.8       DEFINITION OF TERMS

Here, the researcher shall try as much as possible to explain certain technical terms used during the course of his study.

Patient: A person or animal who receives treatment from a doctor or other medically educated person.

Diagnosis: The identification of the nature and the cause of an illness

Symptoms: A perceived change in some function, sensation or appearance of a person that indicates a disease or disorder such as fever, headache or rash.

Birth:  The process of childbearing; the beginning of life.

Death: The cessation of life and all associated processes; the end of an organism’s existence as an entity independent from its environment and its return to an inert, nonliving state.

Computerized: Functioning upon or through the medium of computers; digital.
