Effective communication as a tool for good management a case of Nestle Nig. Plc

Abstract

This study was on effective communication as a tool for good management a case of nestle Nig. plc The total population for the study is 200 staff of Nestle Nig Plc. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made managers, administrative staff, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies.

  • Background of the study

Nestle Nig plc is managed by men if proven integrity in the field of management. They realize the important role of communication play in any business set up in order to propagate this role workers of different position in the company have been sent on course both in service and long term overseas training in order to achieve improved performance it is disheartening therefore to finds out that after all these efforts the communication system in the organizaiton continued to deteriorate.  In the words of EB flipo et ab communication serves as a lubricant that faster the smooth operation of the management process.  In contrast to what is obtained these days in business organizaiton, which is characterized, by management directive and authoritarian behaviour of management.

Adequate communication system ensures flexibility and   offers the management and subordinate the opportunity not only to identify problems but also to co-operate in designing solution to them. The cause of communication problem in the company could be attributed to the fact that individual differs.

This is problem that a company inherits because they are common to the society individual are born with different potentialities they also must have had different experience during their childhood youths and as adult   they have had employers a supervisor who have exerted a variety of influence upon than problem arising from the company psychological climate which tends to obstruct communication.  One organization may be permissive in that employees allowed expressing them selves freely and encouraging participating in way of the important activities.  Another organizaiton may be autocratic that individuals are expected to express their opinion and otherwise discouraged from engaging in participative activities expect in rare instance such might be the case of Nestle Nig Plc.

Mechanical inefficiency could also be the cause of the problem in the company. This advanced in the same that they originate from lack of proper facilities on means of communication like telex telephone telegrams fax machines etc.  These factors on tools used for receiving or sanding urgent business information when any of these equipment is not functioning proper information flow is distorted and this is in the interest of the organization this study intends to survey the various ways by which the management of the above named company communication with its environment it is no exaggeration to say that the communication function is the means by which organized activity is unified communication may be cooked up as the means by which behaviours is modified change is effected information is made  productive and organizational goals are achieved. Whether we are considering business enterprise the transfer of information from one individual to another is absolutely essential.  Acting as a binder communication provides information that garden both the smallest subunit and entire complex towards organization goal accomplishment.

Communication is essential for internal function any organization because it integrate the management function special communication is needed to establish and disseminate goods to develop and arouse members of the organization to lead direct motivate and create a climate in which people wants to contribute.  Communication also relate the enterprise to is external environment it is through information exchange that controlled of the division are aware of how their products are.  And also through communication an organizaiton comes into an open system interaction with is environment

 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Inadequacy and distortion of information in the Nestle Nig Plc have led to several ugly consequences like strike action work to rule sit done or go slow which has shown inadequate communication system.  Inadequate communication process in the company has led to great financial loss vita information requiring immediate crucial decision often arrive late that a great loss has been incurred before the information is received.  Delay in communication procedures have endangered management effectiveness unfortunately where this is the case the result has been that rumours arise and often- inadequate communication general misunderstanding and possible low employee moral such has been the problem of the fore mentioned company.

There is misunderstanding between management and different department in the company showing ineffective and uncoordinated communication system must often workers felt that their right such as lawful participation in the communication process as well as in the decision making process are neglected the result has been wrong speculations and this has led to confusion and lack of confidence unhealthy rumours and even conflict between management and workers.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study is to investigate the important of communication system as effective tools in the management of Nestle Nigeria plc. objectives.

  1. To point the importance of communication in the management of any organization.
  2. To reveal the problem of inadequate distortion of information in the company.

3.To map out or design the solution to the problems of lack of communication gadget in the company

4 To reveal the problem of having unqualified staff at strategic points in different department in the printing company.

5 To reveal the misunderstanding between management and different department due to infective and uncoordinated communication system in the printing company limited.

  RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

H0:  there is no importance of communication in the management of any organization

H1: there is importance of communication in the management of any organization

H02: there is no solution to the problems of lack of communication gadget in the company.

H2: there is solution to the problems of lack of communication gadget in the company.

 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study be great help to the management of Nestle Nig plc and the business world in general.  It will also be of great benefit to the management of government owned organization or companies because effective communication helps in reaching government service to the public and profit orientation. The cause and reason of communication problem in business organizaiton and from the knowledge of the factors responsible to take necessary actions and device of good communication mechanism in their business organization.

This study will also act as a guide to the policy in the restructuring of the communication system in their various organizaiton.  The lectures who are educating student in business studies will also benefit from this study since it will expose them to other area of communication.

The following colleagues of the researcher will also benefit from the study since it will expand their knowledge and scope of their understanding of communication.  The study will in no small way enhance the knowledge of communication as it affects the business world

 

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers effective communication as a tool for good management a case of nestle Nig. Plc. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

FINANCE: This is one of the factors that contributed to the sample size used because of inadequate cash to support the sample size

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Communication:   This is the process used by an organization or individual between two or more people.

Management:  This is the process of reaching organization goals by working with and through people other organizational resources

Feedback mechanism: This is the process of receiving information on time after information has been disseminated.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Involves a translation of ideas or directions, command or guide, into oral or written words or actions on the part of the communicator in such a manner that will transfer the ideas from the mind of the communicator to the mind of the receiver, with the aim that the receiver, will react in a manner as envisaged by the communicator [Akinyemi, 1981]. Effective communication is the transfer of message, followed by feedback from the receiver to the sender indicating an understanding of the message [Bernard,1938].
