FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LOW ENROLMENT OF STUDENTS IN FURTHER MATHEMATICS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF MAKURDI BENUE STATE)

ABSTRACT

This research was carried out, factors responsible for the low enrolment of students in further mathematics in some selected secondary schools in Makurdi local government area of Benue state.

The sample of the study was six secondary schools randomly selected in Makurdi L G A Benue state. The sampled schools comprises of three government schools, one private school, one mission school, and one community school. The instrument used was a questionnaire developed for the research and approved by the supervisor.

Data analysis was mainly descriptive and the statistical technique applied in the data analysis was simple summation and percentage. Factors like inadequate supply of qualified teachers, inadequate supply teaching aids and instructional materials and the general notions of students towards further mathematics concepts are deduced as parts of the factors responsible for the low enrollment of students in further mathematics.  And corrective measures suggested are the supply of further mathematics text books and other teaching aids by the governments and qualified teachers that are well equipped should be provided by the governments so as to make the teaching of further mathematics easier and interesting.
