Abstract

This study investigated the intricate interplay between religious influences and family planning decisions among couples in Ekiti East Local Government Area, Nigeria. Employing a quantitative survey research design, a structured questionnaire was meticulously crafted to gather insights from a targeted sample of 120 respondents, representative of the diverse demographic characteristics within the region. The study aimed to unravel the impact of historical religious teachings, current religious beliefs, and the role of religious leaders on the perceptions and decisions related to family planning in the local community. Utilizing SPSS27 for data presentation and analysis, the study employed a t-test to scrutinize hypotheses about the influence of historical teachings, current beliefs, and religious leaders on family planning. The findings indicated a significant influence of historical religious teachings on couples’ perceptions, with a mean score of 85.00. Similarly, the impact of current religious beliefs yielded a mean score of 85.50, underscoring a substantial influence on decision-making processes. Moreover, the role of religious leaders in shaping attitudes towards family planning received a mean score of 81.75, reinforcing their noteworthy influence. In conclusion, the study highlighted the enduring impact of historical religious teachings and the contemporary influence of religious beliefs and leaders on family planning decisions among couples in Ekiti East. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions that consider the prevailing religious dynamics within the community. Based on the study’s outcomes, recommendations include the development of community-based awareness programs to foster a nuanced understanding of family planning within the context of prevailing religious influences. Additionally, collaboration with religious leaders could facilitate constructive dialogue aimed at aligning family planning initiatives with local religious values, ensuring culturally sensitive interventions. These recommendations are pivotal for the formulation of effective policies and programs that resonate with the religious fabric of the community, promoting informed family planning decisions.

CHAPTER ON

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Family planning, an integral component of reproductive health, holds immense significance for the overall well-being of individuals, couples, and societies (Adaka, 2018). As couples navigate the decision-making process related to family planning, they encounter a complex interplay of factors that influence their choices. One such influential factor is religion, which emerges as a substantial force shaping perspectives on family planning (Akinyemi & Isiugo–Abanihe, 2020). In the culturally diverse context of Ekiti East Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Nigeria, the dynamics between religion and family planning practices become particularly noteworthy (Awosusi, 2018). This essay explores the intricate relationship between religious beliefs and the perception of family planning among couples in this unique setting.

Religion has long been a powerful determinant of societal norms, values, and behaviours (Callistus, 2021). In Ekiti East, a region characterized by the coexistence of various religious beliefs, understanding the influence of religion on family planning attitudes and practices becomes crucial (Adaka, 2018). The historical and contemporary religious teachings have played a significant role in shaping the perception of family planning among couples in this area (Akinyemi & Isiugo–Abanihee, 2020). Adaka’s (2018) exploration of the need and methods of family planning acknowledges the multifaceted nature of this topic, emphasizing the role of religious beliefs in influencing family planning decisions.

The diversity of religious beliefs in Ekiti East contributes to a rich tapestry of cultural values and practices. This diversity necessitates a nuanced understanding of how different religious teachings impact attitudes toward family planning (Awosusi, 2018). Delving into the historical influence of religious teachings on family planning, the study by Akinyemi and Isiugo–Abanihe (2020) provides valuable insights into the demographic dynamics and development in Nigeria, emphasizing the interconnectedness between religious beliefs and broader societal issues. The study highlights the need to consider religious factors when designing reproductive health interventions in Ekiti East, given the profound impact of religious teachings on family planning.

In the intricate relationship between religion and family planning, the role of religious leaders cannot be understated. These leaders wield considerable influence in shaping the attitudes of couples towards family planning (Alvergue et al., 2021). Fasiku’s (2020) exploration of family planning practices and marital stability in Southwest Nigeria underscores the impact of religious leaders on individual choices. The study emphasizes the need to recognize the guidance provided by religious leaders in navigating the complex terrain of family planning decisions.

Moreover, the study by Igudu et al. (2021) on the religious beliefs and family planning practices of married women further illuminates the role of religious teachings in influencing reproductive health choices. By focusing on the experiences of married women, the study provides a deeper understanding of how religious beliefs permeate familial decisions, including those related to family planning. These findings contribute to the overarching theme of the intricate interplay between religious teachings and cultural values in shaping perceptions of family planning among couples in Ekiti East.

The cultural sensitivity of reproductive health interventions is paramount, especially in a region with diverse religious beliefs like Ekiti East (Oyebanjo, 2021). The study by Nwabude and Nwagwugwu (2020) on women empowerment and economic development in Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State acknowledges the significance of cultural context in understanding the dynamics of family planning. While not specific to Ekiti East, this study emphasizes the need for tailored interventions that consider the cultural nuances within different regions, reinforcing the importance of cultural sensitivity in promoting reproductive health.

In essence, family planning plays a crucial role in the overall well-being of individuals, couples, and societies, with religion emerging as a significant force shaping perspectives on this matter. The diverse religious landscape of Ekiti East Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Nigeria, adds complexity to the interplay between religious beliefs and family planning practices. Through an exploration of various studies, this essay highlights the historical and contemporary influence of religious teachings, the role of religious leaders, and the necessity for culturally sensitive reproductive health interventions. As individuals and couples navigate the decision-making process related to family planning, recognizing and understanding the impact of religion becomes paramount for promoting effective and inclusive reproductive health initiatives in diverse communities.

Statement of Problem

The intersection of religion and family planning remains a complex and underexplored terrain, especially within the specific context of Ekiti East Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Despite existing research acknowledging the influence of religion on family planning decisions (Adaka, 2018; Akinyemi & Isiugo–Abanihe, 2020), there is a noticeable gap in understanding the intricate dynamics and the nuanced ways in which various religious beliefs impact the perception and adoption of family planning methods among couples in this region.

While Adaka’s (2018) work provides insights into the need and methods of family planning, it primarily offers a broad overview and does not delve deeply into the specific religious factors influencing decision-making in Ekiti East. Akinyemi and Isiugo–Abanihe’s (2020) examination of demographic dynamics and development in Nigeria acknowledges the broad influence of religion but does not provide a granular understanding of how these dynamics manifest at the community level in Ekiti East. Therefore, there is a need for a more focused exploration that considers the local religious landscape and its impact on family planning within this specific community.

The role of religious leaders in shaping attitudes towards family planning is another aspect that requires further exploration. Fasiku’s (2020) study on family planning practices in Southwest Nigeria sheds light on the influence of religious leaders but does not specifically address the unique characteristics of Ekiti East. Understanding the perspectives and guidance provided by local religious leaders in this region is crucial for developing targeted interventions that respect and align with the community’s values.

Additionally, the limited research on the experiences of married women in Ekiti East further highlights a gap in the current body of knowledge (Igudu et al., 2021). While Igudu et al. touches upon religious beliefs and family planning practices, a comprehensive exploration of the lived experiences of married women within the specific religious and cultural context of Ekiti East is lacking. This gap underscores the need for research that captures the voices and perspectives of women within this community, providing a more holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities surrounding family planning decisions.
