ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate the factors militating against the studio acquaintances of theatre arts students in Prince Audu Abubakar University Theatre. The study had three objectives: (1) to identify the specific challenges faced by theatre arts students in their studio acquaintances, (2) to explore the perceptions of theatre arts students and faculty members regarding the studio acquaintances, and (3) to provide recommendations for improving the quality of theatre arts education. The study employed a survey questionnaire to gather data from a sample of 70 theatre arts students and 30 faculty members. The findings revealed that the major challenges faced by theatre arts students in their studio acquaintances include inadequate facilities, limited time for rehearsals, and lack of collaboration among students. The study also revealed that both faculty members and students perceived the studio acquaintances as important for the development of practical skills and creativity. However, they identified the need for improvement in the areas of facilities, curriculum, and pedagogy. Based on the findings, the study recommends the provision of adequate facilities for studio acquaintances, the inclusion of more practical sessions in the theatre arts curriculum, and the adoption of experiential learning pedagogies to enhance student engagement and collaboration. Additionally, the study recommends the establishment of a collaborative environment between students and faculty members to foster effective communication and participation in studio acquaintances.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Theatre has become more popular over the years. It is generally known to people as a building designed for performance of plays, dances etc. In our institution today where there is Theatre Art Department some of their output works in theatre industries, while some are independent, although the word theatre and drama are often used interchangeably (Victor, 2016).
Theatre is not inherent in drama only rather it encompasses the words and action of our everyday activities. Therefore, the Theatre Arts Departments need good management practices in order to enhance their work for the benefit of their student. The theatre manager must be sensible enough to create and maintain effective running of the industry with the help of his colleagues (Victor, 2016).
Theatre arts students in higher institutions are expected to develop a well-rounded understanding of theatre as an art form and the various skills and techniques needed to excel in the field. One of the critical aspects of the theatre arts curriculum is studio acquaintances (Bloone, 2013). It is a vital aspect of the training that involves students working together in a creative space, collaborating with other artists, and exploring their talents and abilities (Bloone, 2013). Prince Audu Abubakar University Theatre is one of the most reputable institutions in Nigeria that offer theatre arts courses (Uthman, 2012). However, despite the excellent training and resources available at the institution, students still encounter challenges that hinder their full participation in studio acquaintances. These challenges can range from poor infrastructure, limited resources, lack of motivation, and inadequate support from the faculty (Uthman, 2012).
Studio acquaintances are a crucial aspect of theatre arts education as it provides a creative space for students to hone their skills and collaborate with others in the field. Studio acquaintances involve practical training sessions where students work on various aspects of theatre arts such as acting, directing, set design, lighting, sound, and costume design (Frank, 2011). The aim of these sessions is to provide students with hands-on experience and practical skills that will prepare them for a career in theatre arts.
Theatre arts education in Nigeria has undergone significant changes over the years. In the past, theatre arts was not regarded as a serious academic discipline, and it was often considered a hobby or a form of entertainment (Frank, 2011). However, with the growth of the theatre industry and the increasing demand for skilled theatre artists, theatre arts education has become more structured and formalized.
Prince Audu Abubakar University Theatre is one of the leading institutions in Nigeria that offer theatre arts courses. The institution has a well-equipped theatre arts department, with state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty members (Ali, 2019). However, despite the resources available at the institution, students still encounter challenges that hinder their full participation in studio acquaintances (Ali, 2019).
Some of the challenges that students face in their studio acquaintances include inadequate resources such as theatre equipment and facilities, limited support from the faculty, poor infrastructure, and lack of motivation (Xaviera, 2011). These challenges can have a significant impact on the quality of students’ training and their ability to excel in the theatre arts field.
Inadequate resources such as limited access to theatre equipment and facilities can limit students’ ability to practice and develop their skills (Xaviera, 2011). Lack of support from the faculty can also affect students’ motivation and confidence in their abilities, leading to a decrease in their participation in studio acquaintances.
Poor infrastructure such as inadequate lighting, sound, and seating can also affect the quality of studio acquaintances (Yin, 2016). For instance, if the lighting is poor, students may not be able to see the details of their work, which can affect their ability to make critical adjustments to their performance (Yin, 2016). Similarly, inadequate seating can make it difficult for students to focus on their work, leading to a decrease in their participation.
Lack of motivation is another significant challenge that theatre arts students face in their studio acquaintances. Motivation is crucial for students to remain focused and engaged in their training (Yolanda, 2016). If students are not motivated, they may not participate fully in studio acquaintances, leading to a decline in the quality of their training.
Overall, these challenges highlight the need to investigate the factors that militate against the studio acquaintances of theatre arts students in Prince Audu Abubakar University Theatre. The findings of this study will provide insights into the challenges that students face in their training and help identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance the quality of theatre arts education in the institution and other institutions in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Theatre arts students in Nigeria face challenges in their studio acquaintances that limit their ability to acquire practical skills and fully participate in the theatre arts field. Some of the factors that militate against their studio acquaintances include inadequate resources, limited support from the faculty, poor infrastructure, and lack of motivation. These challenges have a significant impact on the quality of training that students receive and their ability to excel in their careers.
Despite the significant role that studio acquaintances play in the development of theatre arts students, there is a dearth of empirical studies that have investigated the factors that militate against their studio acquaintances in Nigeria. Thus, there is a gap in the literature that needs to be filled to better understand the challenges faced by theatre arts students in their studio acquaintances.
The motivation for this study is to provide insights into the factors that militate against the studio acquaintances of theatre arts students. The findings of this study will help identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance the quality of theatre arts education in the institution and other institutions in Nigeria. Additionally, this study will contribute to the existing literature on theatre arts education and provide valuable information for stakeholders in the theatre industry, including educators, policy makers, and practitioners. Ultimately, this study aims to improve the quality of training that theatre arts students receive and promote the growth of the theatre arts industry in Nigeria.
