Managerial Skills and Organizational Effectiveness of Private Owned Schools in Yenegoa Bayelsa State

Abstract

This study was on Managerial skills and organisational effectiveness of private owned schools in Yenegoa Bayelsa state. Four  objectives were raised which included: To identify and assess the prevalent managerial skills among business enterprises in Bayelsa State, to examine the level of organizational effectiveness in the selected firms in Yenagoa, to investigate the impact of managerial skills on organizational effectiveness in the context of Bayelsa State and to identify the best practices and strategies for enhancing managerial skills and improving organizational effectiveness. The total population for the study is 75 staff of selected private owned schools in Yenegoa. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies. The study recommended that Implement comprehensive leadership development programs for school administrators and managers. These programs can focus on enhancing communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and other critical leadership skills.

Introduction

1.1Background of the study

  Organization is an entity set up for a purpose. The reason for any going concern is to create utility. The satisfaction of customers is by way of creation of goods and delivery of quality service from any enterprise. For enterprises to remain economically viable and virile, they must attain organizational effectiveness particularly in today’s turbulent business environment. Small and medium scale enterprises are seen as an engine to facilitate economic growth of nations.  In today’s dynamic and competitive business landscape, the success of any organization depends significantly on effective management practices and organizational efficiency. Managerial skills, which encompass a range of competencies and abilities possessed by managers, play a crucial role in driving organizational performance and achieving strategic objectives. Organizational effectiveness, on the other hand, refers to the extent to which an organization achieves its goals efficiently and sustains its competitive advantage in the long term.

Bayelsa State, located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, is known for its vast natural resources and potential for economic growth. The state’s economy largely relies on industries such as oil and gas, agriculture, fishing, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In such a business environment, the effective application of managerial skills is vital to ensure sustainable growth and success. This study aims to explore the relationship between managerial skills and organizational effectiveness in business enterprises operating in Bayelsa, with a specific focus on selected firms in Yenagoa, the state capital.

In contemporary business landscape, managerial skills and organizational effectiveness are critical factors that determine the success and longevity of enterprises. Effective management practices are indispensable in navigating the complexities of a competitive global economy and achieving sustainable growth. For businesses operating in Bayelsa State, these aspects take on additional significance due to the regions unique economic, social and environmental context.

As Bayelsa state continues to attract both local and foreign investments, the business landscape becomes increasingly competitive. For business enterprises yo thrive in this dynamic environment, the role of managerial skills and organizational effectiveness becomes paramount. Managerial skills encompass a set of competencies that enables managers to effectively lead teams, make informed decisions, solve problems and communicate effectively. On the other hand, organizational effectiveness refers to the ability of an organization to achieve its objectives efficiently and sustainably.

Understanding the key managerial skills that drive success and the factors that contribute to organizational effectiveness is essential for business leaders and policy makers. Understanding the relationship between managerial skills and organizational effectiveness is crucial to bolstering the performance and competitiveness of firms in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Bayelsa State, like many regions face challenges related to business management and organizational effectiveness. Business enterprises in the state encounter various obstacles such as leadership inefficiencies, inadequate strategic planning and lack of effective decision making. These issues can hinder growth and profitability, impacting the state’s overall economic development. Thus, this study seeks to identify the key managerial skills required to overcome these challenges and improve organizational effectiveness.

 

1.3   Research Objectives

The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the managerial skills and organizational effectiveness in business enterprises operating in Bayelsa State. The specific objectives include the following:

  1. To identify and assess the prevalent managerial skills among business enterprises in Bayelsa State
  2. To examine the level of organizational effectiveness in the selected firms in Yenagoa.

iii. To investigate the impact of managerial skills on organizational effectiveness in the context of Bayelsa State

  1. To identify the best practices and strategies for enhancing managerial skills and improving organizational effectiveness .

 

1.4  Research Questions

  1. What are the most prevalent managerial skills among business enterprises in Bayelsa state.
  2. How does organizational effectiveness impact the performance of selected firms in Yenagoa

iii. What is the relationship between managerial skills and organizational effectiveness in these business enterprises

  1. What are the best practices and strategies that can enhance both managerial skills and organizational effectiveness. .

1.5  Research Hypotheses

 The following hypotheses were formulated

Ho1: the level of organizational effectiveness is not significantly influenced by the prevalent managerial skills among business enterprises in Bayelsa State.

Ho2: there is no organizational effectiveness in the selected firms in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

Ho3: there is no impact of managerial skills on the effectiveness of organizations in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

Ho4: there are no best practices and strategies that can enhance managerial skills and organizational effectiveness of business enterprises in Bayelsa State.

1.6     Scope of the Study

The study focuses on investigating the relationship between managerial skills and organizational effectiveness in business enterprises in Bayelsa State, with a case study of selected firms in Yenagoa. The study will encompass firms from various industries and sectors to provide a comprehensive understanding of managerial skills and organizational effectiveness in Bayelsa State.

The study will consider firms of different sizes, including small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations, to capture the diversity of the business landscape

 

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study holds several significant implications for various stakeholders in the business community of Bayelsa and beyond:

Business Managers: The findings of this study will provide business managers in Bayelsa with insights into the most critical managerial skills necessary for achieving organizational effectiveness. They can leverage this knowledge to enhance their leadership and decision-making abilities, leading to better business outcomes.

Business Owners and Investors: Understanding the link between managerial skills and organizational effectiveness will help business owners and investors make informed decisions while hiring and promoting managers. It will also assist them in allocating resources effectively to maximize the overall performance of their enterprises.

Government and Policymakers: By identifying challenges faced by managers and businesses in Bayelsa, policymakers can develop targeted interventions and policies to support business growth and economic development in the region.

1.8  Organization of the Study

This study consists of five chapters.

Chapter one consists of the introduction, background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives, research questions, research hypotheses, scope of the study, significance of the study and the organization of the study.

Chapter two deals with literature review, empirical framework, conceptual framework and the theoretical framework.

Chapter three covers the methodology, research design, population of the study

Chapter four deals with the findings, data presentation, data analysis and discussion of results.

Chapter five covers the summary of findings, recommendations and conclusion of the study.
