INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
In recent years, there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of social services in the healthcare sector. Medical/healthcare social services play a crucial role in addressing the social and psychological needs of patients, as well as ensuring their overall well-being (Adepoju, 2019). These services encompass a wide range of activities, including counselling, patient education, discharge planning, and coordination of community resources. Tertiary health institutions, such as the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, are pivotal in providing specialized healthcare services to patients with complex medical conditions (Onwujekwe & Etiaba, 2020). Understanding the relevance of medical/healthcare social services in such institutions is essential for enhancing patient outcomes and improving the overall healthcare system.
Medical/healthcare social services have shown a significant impact on patient care and well-being. Adepoju (2019) conducted a study assessing the impact of medical social work services on patient care in Nigeria. The study found that medical social work interventions improved patient outcomes by addressing psychosocial issues, facilitating communication between patients and healthcare providers, and ensuring the availability of necessary resources for patient care. These findings highlight the crucial role of medical/healthcare social services in enhancing patient well-being.

Therefore, investigating the relevance of medical/healthcare social services in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital is crucial for identifying areas of improvement and enhancing patient care.
The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital is a prominent tertiary health institution in Nigeria, providing specialized care to a diverse patient population. As such, it serves as an ideal setting to study the relevance of medical/healthcare social services in the Nigerian healthcare context. The hospital’s annual report for 2022 highlights the increasing demand for social services and the need for a comprehensive understanding of their impact on patient outcomes (University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, 2022). This underscores the importance of researching to assess the current state of medical/healthcare social services in the hospital and identify areas for improvement.
Moreover, the Nigerian healthcare system is facing numerous challenges in providing quality and accessible care to its population. Inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and workforce shortages pose significant obstacles to delivering effective healthcare services (Onwujekwe & Etiaba, 2020). By investigating the relevance of medical/healthcare social services, this study can contribute to addressing these challenges and enhancing the overall healthcare system’s performance. It will provide valuable insights into the current state of social services, identify barriers and challenges faced by service providers, and offer recommendations for improvement.
In conclusion, the relevance of medical/healthcare social services in tertiary health institutions, particularly the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, cannot be overstated. Adepoju’s (2019) research has shown the positive impact of medical social work interventions on patient care and well-being. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the specific context of Nigeria, limiting the development of evidence-based strategies to optimize social service delivery. Statement of Problem
The provision of medical/healthcare social services in tertiary health institutions in Nigeria, particularly at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, has received limited research attention, leading to a significant knowledge gap. While the importance of these services in addressing the social and psychological needs of patients is widely acknowledged, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of their relevance and effectiveness within the Nigerian healthcare context. This knowledge gap hampers the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies to optimize the delivery of social services, hindering the potential for improved patient outcomes and overall healthcare system performance.
Furthermore, the specific challenges and barriers faced by medical/healthcare social service providers in tertiary health institutions in Nigeria, including the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, remain largely unexplored. These challenges may include inadequate resources, limited staffing, insufficient training and professional development opportunities, and inadequate collaboration and coordination with other healthcare professionals. Understanding these barriers is crucial for identifying areas for improvement and enhancing the delivery of effective and efficient social services.
Additionally, the perspectives and experiences of patients receiving medical/healthcare social services within tertiary health institutions in Nigeria, including their satisfaction levels and perceived impact on their overall well-being, require further investigation. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive research study that examines the relevance, effectiveness, challenges, and patient perspectives of medical/healthcare social services at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Such a study would provide valuable insights to inform policy decisions, improve service delivery, and ultimately contribute to the overall enhancement of patient care in tertiary health institutions in Nigeria.
 Research Questions
To address the research gap and achieve the objectives of this study, the following research questions will guide the research:
- What are the current medical/healthcare social services available at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital?
- How do these services contribute to the overall well-being and satisfaction of patients?
- What are the barriers and challenges faced by medical/healthcare social service providers in delivering effective care at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital?
Research Objectives
The study aims to accomplish the following objectives:
- To assess the existing medical/healthcare social services provided at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
- To evaluate the impact of medical/healthcare social services on patient well-being and satisfaction.
- To identify the barriers and challenges faced by medical/healthcare social service providers in delivering effective care in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Research Hypotheses
Based on the research questions and objectives, the following hypotheses will be tested:
H1: The availability of comprehensive medical/healthcare social services positively impacts patient well-being and satisfaction.
H2: Some significant barriers and challenges hinder the effective delivery of medical/healthcare social services in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
H3: Improving the quality and accessibility of medical/healthcare social services leads to better patient outcomes and overall healthcare system performance.
 Justification of the Study
This study holds significant importance for various stakeholders in the Nigerian healthcare system. By investigating the relevance of medical/healthcare social services in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, policymakers, hospital administrators, and healthcare providers can gain valuable insights into the current state of social services and identify areas for improvement. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on medical/healthcare social services in Nigeria and serve as a basis for evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation.
Firstly, the study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the current medical/healthcare social services available at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
