Smartbin: Efficient Waste Handling Based On The Internet Of Things (IOT)
ABSTRACT
In our present society today, it is clearly seen that garbage cans are being placed in open environments because it needs to be accessed by the public. It can be observed that those garbage cans usually get filled up and overflow and litter the environment. Patil (2015) claims that this uncontrolled littering can lead to a gradual encroachment of diseases that can be very harmful to the human health. Littered trash can also produce bad and offensive smell around the surroundings. To tackle this problem, we had to introduce the SmartBin (Efficient Waste Handling) system. In the proposed system, the garbage can will be placed at a location and connected to Wi-Fi or an Ethernet port. The garbage can will also be embedded with an ultrasonic sensor (low cost hardware that will track levels of trash in the garbage cans). As soon as the garbage can get to the threshold limit, an email will be sent to the user that the trashcan is almost filled up. A visual representation is also made available on the local server SmartBin connects to.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
1.1 BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION
The Internet of Things is a rapidly growing technology in the IT world. Devices that are connected to the internet and can be controlled are commonly grouped under a term known as the Internet of Things. According to Sandeep et al. (2017) today, growing technological advancement has made it possible for many devices to be connected to the Internet. Mobile devices and other communication hardware are being assembled with sensors and are able to send signals through technologies such as Wi-Fi, 4G, 4.5G to the Internet. Driving down into some commercial areas within Yola, it is evident to see that trash is not handled properly as some areas remain largely littered. The Internet of Thing can be a useful tool in solving this problem.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
In the Northern part of the country, specifically in Adamawa State, waste management is almost totally abandoned. Private firms took up the challenge and have been working so hard to ensure waste is properly disposed. Most parts of the state still remain in mess with trash littered everywhere despite the efforts of the private firms. Owing to the menace being done by improper waste management, it is imperative to design a system

that can efficiently tackle this problem. SmartBin is a system that monitors the level of trash in several cans over the Internet and notifies the user when levels get to the threshold limit. These smart trash cans are equipped with ultrasonic sensors and Raspberry pi which is capable of communicating to the Internet.
1.3 PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The objective is to design an intelligent system for waste bin detection using the Internet of Things technology. This system can would go a long way at controlling the unattended trash being littered in the environment.
1.4 OUTLINE OF THE REPORT
Chapter 1 clearly introduces the system to be developed as well as its problems and the objectives.
Chpater 2 states the requirements needed to develop the system. These requirements range from the functions to hardware and finally the connection of the various devices that are being used to develop this system.
Chapter 3 outline the design and development of this system. It starts by stating its hardware design to the high level design, process design and fianlly the software design
Chapter 4 talks about the future implementation for the system as well as the conclusion.
