Chapter one
Introduction
- Background of the study
In the development of societies, the importance of the quality of individuals who compose the society is increasing day by day. The objective of creating a society of qualified and competent individuals through education has recently been in the agenda of teaching programs. Parallel to the development in teaching programs, the studies in the field of teacher competencies are also increasing (Huntly,2008; Bellm,2008; Demirel,2009; Selvi,2010). The children and the youth who will ensure the continuity of the society should have good characters in addition to knowledge. Qualified and well trained individuals equipped with positive values are required to create serene, content and successful societies and therefore more resources are provided in Turkey to educate qualified and competent individuals (MEB, 2012:208). Acquisition of positive character attributes in schools in addition to field knowledge is possible through values included (MEB, 2004;2006;2009).
The moral character of young people has attracted much media attention in recent years with frequent reports of juvenile crimes and anti-social behaviour. In a poll by Yougov (Rifkind & Maher, 2008), 49% of people agree that children are a danger not only to themselves but to adults. Over a third (35%) agree that ‘nowadays it feels as if the streets are infested with children’; and 43% felt that action had to be taken to protect them from young people.
Teacher role is the set of understandings of what it means to be a teacher in a given context. It is sociohistorically constructed, institutionally maintained, and contextualized at the school level in response to the needs of the community. The role of teacher in character formation firstly we should look into the meaning of character. The term “character” refers to the tendency to act in ways that are consistent with what one understands to be morally right.
Any child who is being cared for will likely to care for others and will engage as citizen in the moral life of the community. Character formation always begins with caring relationship. This relationship first begins at home by parents and then it is extended to school by teachers. Character builds up hard work, security and courage etc. He can also make him/her able to recognize what is good and what is bad. He can teach a student how to test reality. When a student inculcates this he will always act morally in all the situations of life. He / She will learn from his mistakes and always be truth worthy, respectable, responsible to the society and world. Good relations of students and teachers create trust and respect. By that a student respects others also and adjusts with society which is the primary aim of education of the whole world. A teacher should also take care of age of the learner during character formation as age factors consideration is very important matter in this process (https://lifelearners.ng)
Statement of the problem
In this modern world teacher’s role has become more challenging and demanding. They are more than entrusted with the task of moulding the character of the child and making them productive members of the society. Parents have limited contact with their wards because of hectic life and earning money to secure the future of their child. It is the teacher who fills this vacuum as authority figure, friend and Guide. School going children in their early stages are still in the process of physical and mental development. Teachers represent role models for them and they are in a unique position to influence and guide their students. If they perform their role well the student will realize the importance of the positive traits and values being imparted to him. Based on this the researcher wants to investigate teacher’s role in character formation of secondary school students in owerri municipal
