The importance of learning French as a second foreign language to a bilingual secretary
Abstract
This study was on The importance of learning French as a second foreign language to a bilingual secretary. The total population for the study is 200 staffs of Yabatech. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made HOD, senior lecturer, assistant lecturer and graduate assistant were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies.

- Background of the study
The French language is the second most important language spoken worldwide, thus it is an international language. Nigeria is bordered on the by French speaking countries and so for easy communications with these Francophone countries it will be very good if most Nigerians can speak or communicate in the French language as it will help a lot economically. However, this is not the case with most Nigerians. For one to speak good French, one should go to a French teaching school and not to these Francophone countries as their form of spoken French is pidgin or colloquial and in the speaking of French, the speaker is deemed to be disrespectful if he or she does not speak the language well or use the right phrases, words, sentences, etc., especially when speaking to adults and distinguished persons. Secretarial Students offer French and this is a golden opportunity for the students to be good in the speaking and writing of the French language but unfortunately after the three years course, the students who graduate are found wanting with a lot of difficulties and challenges both in the spoken and the written French. Thus the secretary graduates come out with a deficiency due to a lack of good communication in the French language to perpetuate the National malaise. Secretaryship and Management Studies Department within the School of Business to produce HND Secretaryship Graduates who offer French. At the end of the three years course, these Secretaryship graduates are expected to speak and write the French language with minimum difficulty so as to be termed as being Bilingual Secretaries. However, students graduating from this area of study complain a lot as most of them find it difficult to acquire the skills in both the speaking and writing of the French language. This challenge has gone far to hit the graduates from the Department with French background as they find it very difficult to justify their status as being bilingual during interviews for employments. It is with this background that the researchers want to delve deep into the above identified problem that the students are facing in order to find proper solutions to the dilemma
Statement of the study
To make it possible for Secretarial French students to speak and write the French language fluently after a three year course with the available equipment and be termed as being Bilingual Secretaries: the specifics are, to find out the turn out competent Secretaries, to determine why the students are not able to read and write the French language after three years, to find out if the French speaking difficulty is peculiar to only the Secretaryship department and also to find out the background of the students admitted to the department to study the French language
Objective of the study
The objectives of the study ae;
- To find out the important of learning French as a second language
- To find out why many find it difficult to learn French as a second language
- To find out the challenges of bilingual secretary
Research hypotheses
For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;
H0: there is no important of learning French as a second language
H1: there is important of learning French as a second language
H02: there are no challenges of bilingual secretary
H2: there are challenges of bilingual secretary
Significance of the study
The study will be very significant to students and secretaries. The study will give a clear insight on the importance of learning French as a second foreign language to a bilingual. The study will also serve as a reference to other researcher that will embark on the related topic
Scope and limitation of the study

The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Bilingual secretaries and personal assistants (PAs) deal with administrative work in more than one language. They play an important role in international communication amongst businesses.
