ABSTRACT

 

This study is on time management strategies and job performance of teachers in selected junior secondary school in Benin Metropolis. The study are assess the following objectives: To ascertain whether personal time management affect teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis, to ascertain whether school administration time management affect teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis, to find out the effects of time management strategies on teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis and to ascertain whether time management strategies affect academic performance of student. The study uses simple percentage for analysis

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

 

Time is the most precious thing in the world. Time is the second name of care and cure that solves as well as resolves the difficult and impossible problems and matters of the people and the nations of the world. The nations who took care about time and made their policies and planning according the needs and the requirements of their people and the competition of nations at global level, they became as the developed nations and they also acquired, saved, popularized and made their strong identification among the countries of the world. Because the wasted time cannot be replaced with increasing demands at workplace and home. The pace of life is becoming fast that’s why people are trying to do things faster to contract time expenditure as eat faster, less sleep and make phone calls while having lunch and working (Garhammer, 2002)

Time management (TM) is an indispensable element of school organization. It is the art of arranging, scheduling and budgeting one’s time to achieve objectives (Mohanty, 2003). Time management is universal phenomenon. It is a process which involves the determination of needs and prioritization of tasks. It is very difficult to control and manage. Most people think that time cannot be control by itself. Time is not a material thing that can be easily handled rather than a man has to leech with its flow. The desire of more free time has been increased from last four to five decades. According to Green and Skinner (2005) time management points a high inconsistency between individual’s estimations of time usage and output results.

It is acknowledged across the globe that time management for teachers is more important than any other professionals because they are master of the fate of future generation. As Horng, (2010) and Master, (2013) reported that time management is an important element for teachers’ effectiveness and school’s results. Two main components of time management are planning and scheduling of work. According to Cheng, Mahlke, Warter, Anik and Hwu, (1994) principals’ administration and time management issues are highly related to the performance of school. Ritchie (2002) reported that school improvement requires a special focus of heads on time management.

Teachers play a vital role in the attainment of goals in education and the nation at large. Teachers are the ones responsible for high standards in education, transmission of norms and national values in their pupils by teaching them as well as being good models to them. In order to achieve this much time management is very vital, time is a very precious thing in the world. Time management is fundamental to the performance of any organization especially the teaching environment. The principal issues of time management can be classified under three headings, principles related to the nature of the job, related to the personality and attribute of the employee’s, and those persons who make up the employee’s role set. Learning how to effectively manage time is an important skill that we all need in order to be successful in life. Time management is an indispensable element of school organization, it is the art of arranging, scheduling and budgeting one’s time to achieve objectives, Mohanty (2003).

The teacher that gives great attention to their tasks always shows higher outcomes. Better time management will enhance the worker’s productivity and enables them to work in smarter ways (Green & Skinner, 2005). Likewise, Jamal (1984) studied that effective time management reduces job stress and increases the job performance of teacher. Claessens (2004) acknowledged that better time management give more control of individual to his time and resultantly decreases the work anxiety and higher the job performance. Good time management can be proved as a good predictor of other factors that are associated with job performance. All those professionals who have good time management showed lower emotional exhaustion and have less job-related fatigue contributors of time management training also exhibit higher level of balance between work and home (Green &Skinner, 2005). Based on this background the researcher wants to investigate time management strategies and job performance of teachers in selected junior secondary school in Benin metropolis

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Teachers play a vital role in the attainment of goals in education and the nation at large. They are the ones responsible for high standards in education which makes it important for them to be well knowledgeable and well equipped in all aspects of their lives. Time Management is therefore the teachers tool for effectiveness and maximum job performance in achieving organizational and individual goals. Teacher performance can be achieved through conscious management of time as the effectiveness of any organization or activity is bent on time usage, However, it’s been observed that a large number of teachers and even school administrators have hardly met up their expected job performance level for reasons of inappropriate time management skills.

  • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To ascertain whether personal time management affect teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis
  2. To ascertain whether school administration time management affect teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis
  3. To find out the effects of time management strategies on teacher’s job performance in some selected secondary school in Benin metropolis
  4. To ascertain whether time management strategies affect academic performance of student

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will be very significant to students, ministry of education and policy makers. The study will give a clear insight on the time management strategies and job performance of teachers. The study will give out in details on how to manage time and the strategies to be used. The study will also serve as reference to others researcher that will embark on the related topic.

  • SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers time management strategies and job performance of teachers in selected junior secondary school in Benin metropolis. The researcher encounters some constraints which limit the scope of the study namely:

AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

Financial constraint– Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

DEFINITION OF TERMS

TIME MANAGEMENT: Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity.

JOB PERFORMANCE: Job performance is a means to reach a goal or set of goals within a job, role, or organization (Campbell, 1990), but not the actual consequences of the acts performed within a job

TEACHER: A teacher is a person who helps people to learn. A teacher often works in a classroom. There are many different kinds of teachers. Some teachers teach young children in kindergarten or primary schools. Others teach older children in middle, junior high and high schools
