The Role of Infrastructure Development on the Alleviation of Poverty in Nigeria ( a Case Study of Umuahia, Abia State) CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION   1.1 Back ground of study  Infrastructure, according to Idachaba (1985), consists of physical, social, and institutional capital infrastructures that assist residents in their production, distribution, and consumption activities while also improving the quality of life. The Effect of Information Communication Technology on Environmental Management and Resource Use Among Crop Farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria

The Effect of Information Communication Technology on Environmental Management and Resource Use Among Crop Farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria   Abstract The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in agriculture is vital for preventing stagnation in the dissemination, utilization and application of scientific, agricultural, resource and environmental information for purposeful development. For farmers to reap the benefits of ICT, they must not only have access, but they must also have the capacity to use devices effectively and in productive ways. In spite of the potential benefits of ICT in accessing resources, market and environmental information, very little is known about the factors that affect access and use of ICTs as well as the effect on environmental management and resourceuse among crop farmers. The study was carried...

An Assessment of the Economic Effects of Cattle Rearer’s Activities on Crop Farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria

An Assessment of the Economic Effects of Cattle Rearer’s Activities on Crop Farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria ABSTRACT The study was designed to assess the economic effect of cattle rearers activities on crop farmers in Kogi State. Incidentally, the agricultural sector in Nigeria, particularly in Kogi State, has not been doing so well. Output has failed to keep pace with the rising population pressure. Similar studies have also been carried out on Fulani herdsmen but none addressed the economic effects of cattle rearers activities on crop farms in Kogi State, hence the existence of the knowledge gap which this study hope to fill. This and other economic issues was what this study addressed. In carrying out the study, survey research design was adopted. A multi-stage sampling technique was used. One local government area (LGA) was selected...

Assessing the Participatory Aspects of Credit Programmes – Evidence From a Village Adoption Scheme in Nigeria

Assessing the Participatory Aspects of Credit Programmes - Evidence From a Village Adoption Scheme in Nigeria A major choice for governments in developing countries is that of strategies for agricultural and rural development. The centrality of a system of affordable agricultural credit to most rural development efforts makes credit programmes  a top priority. In Nigeria, as in other developing countries, large-scale directed credit programmes have proved far too costly to manage, dogged as they are by poor co-ordination, inadequate funding, administrative overlap, corruption and general inefficiencies. The failings of mainstream financial institutions in rural (and agricultural) lending generally, and in Nigeria in particular, are considered elsewhere (see Hoff and Stiglitz, 1990; Oloniniyi, 1977). In Nigeria, such programmes as the...

Age and Vocational Interest as Correlates of Reentry of Girls Into School in Ebonyi State

Age and Vocational Interest as Correlates of Reentry of Girls Into School in Ebonyi State CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Education is the only means for the sustainable growth and development of a country, especially economic development. The 21st century is the age of globalization, liberalization, and privatization. Since globalization took off in the year of 1991, free economic policies have been adopted. Since then, education has become job-oriented or market-oriented. Today‘s education takes the approach of supplying huge numbers of specific and skilled business personnel to make them fit for the particular industrial jobs in the market. This leads to specialization in professional or vocational education. People do not prefer general courses today; rather they take diversions at a certain point in their study...

An Assessment of Socio-economic Determinants of Child Labour in Kano State Nigeria

An Assessment of Socio-economic Determinants of Child Labour in Kano State Nigeria CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study A child is the wellspring of man's and his community's revitalization. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously enacted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child in 1959, stating that mankind owes the child the best that it has to offer and that every child is entitled to protection in the early years (adequate health care, food and social service and preparing for later years without respect to social status, sex, race and so on). The United Nation convention and Africa's charter define a child as every human below the age of fourteen years old. Children are the most vulnerable members of the human species, and they are the most vulnerable to abuse in society. The statement by no means dismisses...

An Evaluation of Service Delivery in the Public Sector in Nigeria: the Perspective of Nigeria’s Budget Process

An Evaluation of Service Delivery in the Public Sector in Nigeria: the Perspective of Nigeria’s Budget Process INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Providing more public services with less public spending is an ongoing challenge for all developing countries. The provision of public services in the country is the primary responsibility of the government, complemented by the private sector. Service delivery is more complex in the public sector as it is not just about meeting expressed needs, but finding out the needs that are not expressed, setting priorities, resource allocation, and publicly justifying and accounting for what has been done. In most developing countries, the public sector plays a significant role in service provision as it controls much of the economic resources. In view of this, public agencies have come under pressure...
