Democracy, according to the Webster New Encyclopaedic Dictionary (1995), is a form of government in which the people have absolute authority and may exercise it directly or indirectly via representation. According to Lindell and Scott (1999), the phrase derives from the Greek word (demokratia), which was formed in the 5th century B.C. from (demos) "people" and (kratos) "power" or "rule."
