Addressing Contemporary Health Challenges of the Elderly Through Community-based Sports in Warri Metropolis.
Abstract
The study investigated the effectiveness and sustainability of community-based sports programs for the elderly population in Warri Metropolis using a quantitative survey research design. A structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from a sample of 120 respondents. The data collected were presented and analyzed using SPSS27 software. Hypotheses were tested using the t-test method. Findings revealed that participation in community-based sports programs was positively associated with improvements in physical health outcomes among elderly individuals. However, engagement in these programs did not significantly increase social integration and mental well-being. Additionally, the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of such initiatives were found to depend on factors such as funding, community support, and organizational capacity. Based on the findings, it was concluded that community-based sports programs have the potential to enhance the health and well-being of the elderly population in Warri Metropolis but require strategic planning and support to ensure effectiveness and sustainability. Recommendations include increasing funding and resources, promoting awareness and outreach, tailoring programs to diverse needs, fostering community engagement, providing training and support, addressing barriers to participation, implementing monitoring and evaluation, and fostering long-term sustainability.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
The global population is rapidly ageing, leading to a myriad of health challenges for the elderly, including chronic diseases, reduced mobility, cognitive decline, and social isolation (Dobriansky et al., 2021). These challenges are further exacerbated in societies like Warri Metropolis, Nigeria, where there is limited access to healthcare services and inadequate support systems for the elderly (World Health Organization, 2022).
Addressing these health challenges requires innovative approaches beyond traditional medical interventions (Cleland et al., 2022). One promising avenue is community-based sports programs, which have long been recognized for their positive impact on physical health, mental well-being, and social integration across different age groups (US Census Bureau, 2022). Community sports initiatives tailored for the elderly offer unique benefits in promoting active ageing and enhancing the overall quality of life (Harada et al., 2023).
Regular physical activity among older adults has been associated with improved cardiovascular health, muscle strength, balance, and flexibility, reducing the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers (US Census Bureau, 2022). Moreover, physical activity has positive effects on mental health, reducing the risk of depression and anxiety while enhancing cognitive function (Bassuk et al., 2023).
Community-based sports programs provide opportunities for socialization and community engagement, essential for combating social isolation among the elderly (McKhann et al., 2021). Participation in group activities fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, leading to improved mental well-being and a higher quality of life (Rowe & Kahn, 2019).
These programs also facilitate intergenerational interaction, breaking down barriers between different age groups and promoting mutual understanding and support (McKhann et al., 2021). Additionally, community-based sports initiatives can be adapted to accommodate various fitness levels and physical abilities, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all members of the community (Rowe & Kahn, 2019).
Implementation of community-based sports programs requires community support and involvement to ensure sustainability over the long term (US Census Bureau, 2022). However, the relatively low cost of these initiatives makes them feasible for implementation in resource-constrained settings like Warri Metropolis, Nigeria, and similar communities (US Census Bureau, 2022).
Statement of Problem
The elderly population in Warri Metropolis, Nigeria, faces significant health challenges due to factors such as limited access to healthcare services, inadequate support systems, and a lack of tailored interventions to address their specific needs (World Health Organization, 2022). Despite the growing recognition of the importance of community-based approaches to improving elderly health, there remains a gap in the availability of such programs in Warri Metropolis.
Furthermore, existing healthcare services often fail to adequately address the unique health needs of the elderly population, leading to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, mobility issues, cognitive decline, and social isolation (Dobriansky et al., 2021). The lack of targeted interventions exacerbates these issues, resulting in a decreased quality of life and increased healthcare burden for both individuals and the healthcare system (US Census Bureau, 2022).
Moreover, there is limited research examining the effectiveness of community-based sports programs specifically tailored for the elderly population in Warri Metropolis. While studies from other regions have demonstrated the positive impact of such interventions on physical health, mental well-being, and social integration among older adults (Harada et al., 2023), the applicability of these findings to the unique context of Warri Metropolis remains unclear.
Additionally, there is a need to explore the feasibility and sustainability of implementing community-based sports programs for the elderly in Warri Metropolis. Factors such as community support, resource availability, and cultural considerations may influence the success of these interventions (Rowe & Kahn, 2019). However, there is a lack of research addressing these specific challenges and providing guidance on how to overcome them effectively.
In summary, the gaps in the existing literature highlight the need for further research to understand the specific health challenges faced by the elderly population in Warri Metropolis, Nigeria, and to develop and evaluate tailored interventions, such as community-based sports programs, to address these issues effectively.
Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study were to:
- Explore the effectiveness of community-based sports programs in improving the physical health and well-being of the elderly population in Warri Metropolis.
- Investigate the impact of participation in community-based sports on social integration and mental well-being among elderly individuals in Warri Metropolis.
- Assess the feasibility and sustainability of implementing community-based sports initiatives as a means of addressing the health challenges of the elderly in Warri Metropolis.
Research Questions
This study sought to answer the following research questions:
- What are the perceived benefits of participating in community-based sports programs among the elderly population in Warri Metropolis?
- How does engagement in community-based sports influence social interactions and mental well-being among elderly individuals in Warri Metropolis?
