Abstract on Comparative Analysis Of Students’ Secondary School Performance In Biology Between 2012 And 2016 In Oyo Town

This research work is the exact comparative analysis of students’ performance in West African Examination Council Biology from 2012-2016. The descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The researcher went to four selected secondary schools in the four local government in Oyo town to collect data on WAEC result in Biology from 2012 to 2016. The interest of the researcher is to compare to the performance of students in biology when the course is meant for all students and when it is restricted to science students only. From the findings, it was discovered that private school students performed more than their counterparts in public schools. Also, the performance of science students tends to be more encouraging compared to that of non-science students.  Recommendations were made so that there would be an improvement in the performance of students.

Chapter One on Comparative Analysis Of Students’ Secondary School Performance In Biology Between 2012 And 2016 In Oyo Town

Background of the study

Meaning of academic performance of students is challenging, since science student performance is the produce of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors.

Education ought to be growing as a profitable industry with prime objective of maximizing profit by delivering high quality education high quality education that produces well educated, skilled and mannered student according to needs and requirement of dynamically growing market. These are two groups of students as generally perceived. That is, those who improve and those who don’t improve.

The student performance can be affected by affected by different factors such as learning abilities because new paradigm about learning assumes that all student can and learn at higher levels, but it should not be considered as constraints because there are other factors like race, gender, sex that can affect student’s performances (Hainsen 2000).

Meshiachoudis (2001) explained the effect of age qualification and distance from learning place on the student performance. Qualification in his explanation concerns the readiness of students in joining a particular discipline in the school. For instance, a student is not capable of doing science in the secondary school joins science because his/her friends are offering the subject.

Kirby(2007) added that the academic performance of students is also affected by student impatience.

Yronne (1998) further elaborated that student academic performance is very much dependent on SEB (socio-economic background);

Alexander (2001) explained that some of the practice adopted by secondary school administration can also influences their academic performance, such practice like club, media culture clubs e t c. meanwhile, looking at the fact that our main focus of this writing is to compare how student perform or the performance of students offering biology in Oyo township from 2012-2016. You find out that science subjects involve students whose brain is sharp, not student whose I give is low and cannot perform or solve any mathematics problem nor draw diagram, rather they move to the simplest subject that they can perform better. That is why when you go into all these clubs mentioned above, you find out that most of the students there are not science class. Science students don’t have time and chance for all this because of mathematical and diagram involvement reflecting to point out they do not have time for grammer. But of a truth that they do not have chance of joining some of the above mentioned practice (clubs, cultural groups and media) which is of great help to passing English language in WAEC, it is well known that most of the essay in WAEC are debts.

According to Bello Bello, an Abuja based educationist, a member of all Nigeria committee of principals of secondary schools ANCOPPS. The truth is that the reading culture in Nigeria is generally poor. To make it worse, these days most of our students hardly read. Listed they waste their precious time watching television or films, listening to music, playing video/computer games e t c.

Another educationist, Mohmud(2009) attribute the dismal performance in WAEC examination to the lackadaisical attitude of the government and its refusal to adequately. Find the education sector. According to him, on several occasions, we clamoured for improved budgetary allocation to the education sector but all these have fallen on deaf ears.

For instance, UNESCO recommended that 26 percent of any country’s budget should be allocated to the education sector but instead, what do we have in Nigeria? Government paying up service to education sector, other countries who understand the importance of education have taken practices steps to adequately fund their education sector. For instance, Ghana has allocated 29percent to its education sector, even for more than UNESCO recommendation. The same thing with South Africa who allocated 35% to their education sector. So until these things are implemented we would continue to montage the future of our children.

Comparative study refers to the comparison of different capabilities or abilities of different groups or individual of the same or different categories (Wikipedia 2009). Comparative study of the performance of student in WAEC in biology in the years.

1.2    Statement of problem

The phenomenon of poor external results among Nigerian students, especially those in senior secondary school is a matter that has become a stakeholders in the education sector in the country.

Over the years, the majority of students that sat for May/June West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and November/December National Examination Council(NECO) have been recording high failure rate not only in the area of overall performance of the students, but also in the motivational subjects including the high rate of failure has been a dominant feature of students’ performances in secondary schools.

Recently biology was made a noncompulsory subject school in a move to lighten the burden of work on students and include some other new subjects. This move have been criticized of some as denying non science students the opportunity of a window to the science world. The reasons been that school biology curriculum remains rational and relevant in their future endeavours. The criticism is instified, since it is not based on higher failure among non-science students.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose underlying is to investigate the performance of the secondary school student in WAEC taking to their comparative performance on biology from the year 2012-2016 in Oyo Township. The study specifically seeks to determine the performance of student in WAEC Biology from 2012-2016 in all four local government of oyo town.
