CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Suicidal behaviour is a critical public health issue that continues to pose a significant challenge worldwide, particularly among young individuals (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). Suicide is a complex phenomenon influenced by various factors, including psychological, social, and environmental determinants (Hawton et al., 2021). These factors interact in intricate ways, contributing to an individual’s vulnerability to suicidal thoughts and behaviours. It is crucial to recognize that suicidal behaviour is not solely an individual problem but also a reflection of broader societal issues and systemic factors (Ribeiro et al., 2021).

In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in the rates of suicide and suicidal ideation among students, highlighting the urgent need to address this issue within educational settings (Auerbach et al., 2019). Academic institutions serve as crucial environments where young individuals spend a significant portion of their lives. The unique pressures and stressors faced by students, including academic demands, social challenges, and transitional periods, can contribute to their susceptibility to suicidal thoughts and behaviours (Kwok et al., 2020).

Numerous studies have documented the concerning prevalence of suicidal behaviour among students. For instance, a systematic review by Mortier et al. (2020) found that the lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation among college students ranged from 10% to 20%, while suicidal attempts ranged from 1% to 10%. These rates indicate the gravity of the issue and emphasize the need for targeted interventions and support systems within educational settings. Addressing suicidal behaviour among students requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses prevention, early intervention, and comprehensive mental health support (Wilcox et al., 2019).

Educational institutions play a crucial role in promoting mental health and well-being among students. They can implement policies and programs aimed at reducing risk factors, fostering protective factors, and promoting help-seeking behaviours (Cleary et al., 2022). Prevention efforts may include awareness campaigns, mental health education, training for staff and faculty, and accessible counselling services. Creating a supportive and inclusive environment that addresses the specific needs and challenges faced by students is vital for preventing and addressing suicidal behaviour (Drum et al., 2020).

Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has further heightened concerns about mental health and the potential impact on suicidal behaviour among students. The pandemic has disrupted academic routines, social interactions, and access to support systems, exacerbating stress and emotional distress (Salari et al., 2020). Studies have reported an increase in mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, among students during the pandemic (Son et al., 2021). It is essential to consider the unique challenges posed by the pandemic and develop tailored strategies to support students’ mental health needs.

Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, located in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, is a higher education institution that serves as an important educational hub for students pursuing technical and vocational courses (Okorie et al., 2022). Like many academic institutions, it faces unique challenges related to the mental health and well-being of its students. The transition to higher education can be a stressful period characterized by academic pressure, adjustment difficulties, financial constraints, and social isolation (Adeosun et al., 2021). These challenges, when compounded with existing mental health issues, can significantly increase the risk of suicidal behaviour among students (Owoeye et al., 2021). It is crucial to address these challenges and provide appropriate support to ensure the mental health and well-being of students in the institution.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to suicidal behaviour among students of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, the study conducted by Okorie et al. (2022) titled “Suicidal Behaviour and Associated Factors Among Students of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana” is of particular relevance.
