Abstract

This study was on effects of voice email system in visual impaired students academic achievement in junior secondary school computer studies. Three objectives were raised which included:  To ascertain the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies before the introduction of a voice email system, to know level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies after the introduction of a voice email system and to ascertain perceptions of visually impaired students towards the use of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected secondary schools in Ibadan. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1Background of the study

The use of technology in education has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, and one area where technology has had a significant impact is in the lives of visually impaired students. One such technology is the voice email system, which can be used to help these students in their academic pursuits, particularly in computer studies.Andzayi, C. A. (2002)

The effects of a voice email system on the academic achievement of visually impaired students in junior secondary school computer studies can be significant. By providing an accessible and convenient means of communication, the voice email system can help these students keep up with their coursework and stay connected with their teachers and classmates.Adeya, T.M. (2004)

One of the main advantages of the voice email system is that it allows visually impaired students to access course materials, assignments, and feedback from their teachers in an audio format, which can be easier for them to understand and process. This can be particularly important in computer studies, where much of the material may be presented visually.Ajayi, G. O. (2002).

The voice email system can also help visually impaired students collaborate with their classmates on group projects, which can be challenging without the ability to see visual cues. By using voice email to communicate with each other, visually impaired students can contribute to group discussions and share their ideas with their peers, helping to foster a more inclusive learning environment.Becker, E & Andy, E (1999)

Furthermore, the voice email system can be particularly useful in situations where visually impaired students may need to ask questions or seek clarification from their teachers outside of class time. By sending a voice email, these students can get the help they need without having to wait for the next class or rely on someone else to read and respond to their written emails.Decorate, E. (1990)

Overall, the use of a voice email system can have a positive impact on the academic achievement of visually impaired students in junior secondary school computer studies. By providing an accessible and convenient means of communication, the voice email system can help these students stay connected, engaged, and successful in their coursework.

Statement of the problem

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a voice email system on the academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following research questions:

What is the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies before the introduction of a voice email system?

What is the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies after the introduction of a voice email system?

What are the perceptions of visually impaired students towards the use of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies?

What are the perceptions of teachers towards the use of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies for visually impaired students?

What are the challenges encountered in the use of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies for visually impaired students?

The study aims to provide insights into the potential benefits and limitations of using a voice email system to support visually impaired students in their academic achievement in computer studies. The findings may be useful for educators and policy makers in designing effective instructional strategies and accommodations for visually impaired students in computer studies.

Objective of the study

  1. To ascertain the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies before the introduction of a voice email system
  2. To know level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies after the introduction of a voice email system
  3. To ascertain perceptions of visually impaired students towards the use of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies

Research Hypotheses

Research hypotheses are formulated;

H1: There is no level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies before the introduction of a voice email system

H2: There is no level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies after the introduction of a voice email system

Significance of the study

This study will be significance to students and policy makers. The study will give a clear insight on the Effects of voice email system in visual impaired students academic achievement in junior secondary school computer studies. The study will also serve as a reference to other researcher that will embark on the related topic

Scope of the study

The scope of the study covers effects of voice email system in visual impaired students academic achievement in junior secondary school computer studies. The will be limited to some selected secondary schools in Ibadan

Limitation of the study

The study on the Effects of voice email system in visually impaired students’ academic achievement in junior secondary school computer studies may have several limitations that could impact the validity and generalizability of its findings. Some of these limitations include:

Small Sample Size: The study may have a small sample size, which could limit the generalizability of the findings to a larger population. The sample size may not be representative of the larger population of visually impaired students, and therefore, the findings may not be applicable to other groups of students.

Lack of Control Group: Without a control group, it may be difficult to determine whether the observed improvements in academic achievement were due to the use of the voice email system or other factors such as motivation, study habits, or teacher quality.

Short Duration: The duration of the study may be too short to determine the long-term effects of the voice email system on academic achievement. A longer duration of the study could have provided more reliable results.

Limited Scope: The study may only focus on the effects of the voice email system on academic achievement in computer studies. The findings may not be applicable to other subjects or academic areas.

Definition of terms

voice email system : The system will prompt the user with voice commands to perform certain action and the user will respond to the same. The main benefit of this system is that the use of keyboard is completely eliminated, the user will have to respond through voice and mouse click only

visual impaired:Visual impairment is a term experts use to describe any kind of vision loss, whether it’s someone who cannot see at all or someone who has partial vision loss. Some people are completely blind, but many others have what’s called legal blindness.

students academic achievement: Academic achievement is the extent to which a student or institution has achieved either short or long term educational goals. Achievement may be measured through students’ grade point average, whereas for institutions, achievement may be measured through graduation rates
